Collection: Wool Rugs

Most RUG ROOT rugs are made from wool: hand-knotted Oushak and Turkish designs, Gabbeh and Moroccan-style Berber rugs, and hand-tufted pieces. Wool is warm underfoot, naturally springy and, looked after well, lasts for many years.

How wool feels and wears

Wool fibres have a natural crimp, so the pile springs back after it is walked on. The fibre carries lanolin, which helps it shrug off light soiling, and wool is naturally slow to catch fire. Our hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs use New Zealand wool; our Moroccan-style rugs use sheep wool with a deeper, more irregular pile.

Where wool works

Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways. Low-pile hand-knotted rugs suit busier spaces. Thicker Berber and Gabbeh piles feel best where you sit or stand barefoot.

Care

• Vacuum regularly. On hand-knotted rugs, use suction only or turn off the beater bar.
• New wool rugs shed loose fibres for the first weeks. This is normal and settles with regular vacuuming.
• Blot spills straight away with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub.
• Rotate the rug every 6 to 12 months so it wears and fades evenly.
• Have it professionally cleaned every one to two years.

Questions

Do wool rugs shed?

Yes, a little at first. Loose fibres from the making process work their way out over the first weeks and reduce with vacuuming.

Is wool a good choice for homes with children or pets?

Wool is hard-wearing and hides everyday dirt well. A tight, low-pile hand-knotted rug is easier to keep clean than a deep, shaggy pile.
